Almost There – Just Before My Fyr til Fyr Ultra

I’m just about to fall asleep. Tomorrow I’ll fly to Copenhagen and carry on from there to the island of Bornholm.

Just one night and my next amazing adventure begins, one that I’ve been waiting since last August.

I haven’t been crazy nervous, it comes and goes. I know that I can run that 59km, so that part is okay. The part that makes me nervous is that I am there with almost 500 of others. And I always run alone 🙂 so a different kind of challenge. I’ll take it!IMG_7317

I’ve never been this meticulous with my packing, but I’ve never packed for a Ultra either, so I don’t really have any routine with this. I just hope that I have everything I need.

I’m ready, I feel positive and good. I’m going to run my own race, enjoy everything and have all the PMA while doing it.

While I was packing, I watched my favorite Ultra videos and that really calmed me down and made me stoked even more, if you can put those two together in some way.

Marathon Training week 4&5

This post is a bit delayed… I planned on writing this straight after I come back from London. Well sometimes things change and that’s okay too :).

Last week went between warm blankets and cup of tea in hand. So that part will be short but let’s put week 4 here.

Week 4

Tuesday – 3miles/ 4,82km planned, instead I took an extra restday and spend it with my friend and rode my bike.

Wednesday – 6miles/ 9,65km planned, 10,2km done. Amazing relaxed run to prep myself for the Bridge the Gap weekend in London :).

Thursday – 3miles/ 4,82km planned, 5km buddyrun done.

Saturday – 11miles/17,7km planned but loads of fun run done! 8km around London, shaking our legs out :).

Sunday – Racedayyyy! 21,2km done in heat next to amazing friend, having waterwars and fun the whole time! 😀

Week 5

Tuesday – 3miles/4,82km planned, but because this was traveling day and I only had about 3 hours of sleep, I decided to take it easy.

Wednesday – 6miles/ 9,65km planned, 5km buddyrun done. Super tired and sluggish run, felt already a bit sick but just wanted to push through.

Thursday – 3miles/ 4,82km planned, spent in bed :(. And the rest of the week too…

But tomorrow I will be back! 🙂 Today I will do some yoga and some stretching to make my body ready for running again after resting well.20140630-131948-47988864.jpg

 

Bridging The Gap with Hackney Half

How can I start this… It was one of those weekends. Filled with friends, love, happiness, running, dancing. Also new friends, good food, bike rides, sunrises and smiles.

This was my second Bridge The Gap event, and I was prepared for this one. I learned my lesson in Berlin, when it comes to eating and drinking enough ;). So I had goals, yes eat and drink, but get to that after party and dance my ass off, because I missed that in Berlin due to heatstroke.

But also prepared for not expecting too much, and mostly enjoying the moments without extra craziness. As I wrote after Berlin, I was sadly a bit disappointed in certain things, so this time I was wiser and also was able to let things fly over me without caring. Which made the whole time in London wayyy better. It’s all about learning. 🙂

The point of this trip was to see friends and run the race. I was so excited to see some friends that I had missed a lot during these couple of months, and how many new ones did I gain, it’s insane how amazing people there are to get to know! When it came to the race, I was so honored to be there for my friend, Jamie, to run his first Half. Sharing is caring and I could not be happier that I did that.

So, I arrived on Friday afternoon, met my amazing friend, Dani and we took my stuff to her place, got bikes and biked to the city. How nice it is to see newish places from that perspective! Best!

Though obviously I wasn’t ready for the switch of the sides while in traffic haha! But no accidents, only a minor fight with a fence when going over it haha! So, Friday was all about meeting people and eating and chilling. It was just so nice, could not ask for anything better. Night riding through London was pretty awesome.

Saturday came fast with a first Bridge The Gap event, shake out run and bbq. I have been dreaming of running with Run Dem Crew through London streets and now I got that chance :). Not only did I got the chance to run with Run Dem, there were people from NBRO/ Denmark, Patta & Running Junkies/Netherlands, Run Pack & Berlin Braves/ Germany, Paris Running Club/ France and obviously my crew, Still Waters Run Deep :). If I forgot someone, please forgive me.

Sunday! Race Day! Heat! Yes, so Sunday came and the weather was super hot already early in the morning, but this time I was prepared. I had my cap on and water bottle. Days before the race some people were saying that the course is quite flat… How wrong were they haha! It started with a hill and when you were just dead from the heat in the end, there was few hills more. During the course there were so many runners who just collapsed from the heat, so hydration was pretty big deal. We had great race, and the crowd around the course were so amazing, thank you! And when we got to Cheer Dem Crew, all happiness broke loose! I jumped on Ciaran in Berlin, and I warned him that I will do it again and boom, I did it twice! 🙂 That feeling that you get from people you know cheering like their lives depended on it, is insane! Makes you feel like you can do anything, and basically you can!! 🙂

I was so happy after the race, so proud, feeling good, surrounded by friends, can you ask for anything better?! And I was ready for the after party 😀 this time nothing would stop me from dancing!

It feels hard to write down what that weekend felt, it’s a lot. It’s been a week since I came home, got a proper after fun flu and now try to make all those feelings in to a blog post… What I can say is that these days with all these amazing people give me hope, and make me feel like home. I have this huge safety net of friends all over the world. I can be who I genuinely am and I am accepted, that is lucky! Obviously I am “secretly” planning the next racetrip to be able to see my friends again, and make many more. I will leave you with photos and stop trying to explain something which I can’t :). First Week of Marathon Training

First week of training behind, didn’t go as planned all the way but “listen to your body” was the thing to do.

Here’s how the original plan was and what I did:

Monday – restday; long bikeride and walking with the dog

Tuesday – 3miles (4,82km); 3,17miles (5,11km)

Wednesday – 5miles (8km); 5,03miles (8,09km)

Thursday – 3miles (4,82km); restday and traveling to Berlin at night for We Own The Night

Friday – restday; We Own The Night Berlin 10K, 00:53:02

Saturday – 8miles (12,87km); restday and traveling back home

Sunday – cross; restday

So, more rest than the plan said, but I really needed it. I learned the hard way that I can’t go on without proper sleep. Traveling late night to Berlin and only sleeping few hours, touristing and racing in the night was just too much to my body and when I got home I had no energy to do any training. I actually slept for good 12 hours and woke up to sunday with a tired mind and body, almost feeling little sick. So I took slow and nice walk with my dog and ate good, strawberries for breakfast :). Sometimes our bodies tell us what to do, and I had to listen mine.

And now… about the race! It was a solodolo thing, like my first race back in Helsinki last August. I felt pretty tired and somehow reluctant before the start, but then at the start line I felt the adrenaline kicking in, really kicking in! There was around 14,000 girls running the race and really narrow streets… That meant a lot of zig zagging and trying to get around to run without any fuss. I felt super strong and fast, something that I haven’t in a long time. I somehow couldn’t believe it. But I kept going and pushed on. There was only one moment when I thought that have I pushed too hard, but then I kept thinking and saying my motto in my head “You got this, You got this!”. One of the best parts of the race was when I realized that I was almost at 9km and there was Run Pack Berlin cheering, and boy did they!! I was all about gunfingers and happiness by that point and just flew past with a huge smile on my face! Thank you guys and girls!!

There were some things that made the experience little sour. Before the race day, there was no proper directions about where the whole thing is going to be, especially if you were from outside Berlin. Even at the race day I didn’t really have any idea where to go. I got some directions from a friend and knew the area, so I did find the place but even around the area, there was no signs or anything. At the race village there was a lot of girls from around the world or at least how I understood from what I heard. And everything and all the info was only in german. I did understood most of it and could help this girl I met there from Denmark, but as in general it was not well organized. That was a slight bummer, and having that many girls running on super narrow roads was a bit of a bummer too. But realizing how strong I can be and how much I can push myself if I believe in myself, are more than I could wish. Strong mind, strong body equals strong race! 🙂

Now it’s new week and new runs ahead, lot of learning behind in only this short time… What will this all bring out of me, that’s what I’m interest in! 😉

Interview: Jamie Simpson

I wanted to interview people that I admire, love, find to be an inspiration and motivation to me.

And first person that I want to share with you, is my Big Bruv and a crew member from Manchester, Jamie Simpson. We met in Berlin while the Half Marathon and became instant friends for life. He keeps me pushing, believes in me and reminds me of my positive parts all the time. Rarely in our lives we find people that we just click and know that the friendship is there, Jamie is like that for me. He is a new to running (less than 4 months!!!) but he has such an amazing spirit and he will go so far with his goals. I have the honor to run next to him in Hackney, which will be his first Half, so happy to share that with him! Super proud of you, my friend!!

Name, age, where you are from, what do you do:

Jamie Simpson aka poppa j, 37 years young, from Manchester England, UK. I work in retail as a store manager for Footasylum.

Why did you start to run?

I started running through my good friends Ciaran and Richard who are co founders of Still Waters Run Deep based in Manchester, they inspired and motivated me to push myself and to step out my comfort zone and in doing so I’ve loved every minute of it!! Apart from getting injured of course.

What running has given to you?

Running has given me a positive frame of mind, strong body, lots of new inspiring people in my life as well as a sense of achievement every time I go that extra couple of mile or kilometers.

Goals when it comes to running? 

My goals are to finish my first race (Hackney Half Marathon) with my running crew and some special people pushing me all the way and then continue to race eventually doing my first full marathon in the near future. At this early stage I’m not looking to smash PB’s just go out there and enjoy the atmosphere and be part of the bridge the gap movement which is also a massive inspiration seeing how much it’s growing.

Favorite race/race memory?

As I’m still waiting to do my first race I can’t say I’ve got a favourite race but my race memory has got to be seeing my two good friends Rich aka Apples and Mirka aka Mirka bird (that’s meeee 😀 ) aka my little big sister finish the Berlin Half Marathon and experiencing the whole atmosphere that surrounded the whole bridge the gap movement and all the friends I made whilst out there, so I have to give a big shout out to the Berlin Braves for hosting us and what an amazing time and memories I have from there!!! 

Personal golden tip/motto when it comes to running?

Recently I had a tattoo which reads “without struggle there is no progress” which means a lot because you need to struggle to then make the progress….as life alone is a struggle!!! And don’t take running too serious, enjoy it, have fun and everything will fall into place.
Favorite running product?
My favourite running product has to be Nike because that’s all I wear, I’m a walking/running advertisement for them. You could call me a Nike whore.
Favorite thing (to do) outside of running?
Favourite thing to do outside of running has to be meeting with my good friends to hangout or to go for a bike ride, Movies, good food.
Guilty pleasure, anything(music/food/drink/whatever) if you have?
Cake!!!!
What inspires/motivates you?
What inspires me is seeing the crew I run with get bigger and stronger and seeing each individual get that little bit faster and stronger with the help and push from everyone else. And what motivates me is knowing I’ve got the crew to back me up when I am struggling.
Favorite song/book/movie/shoe/city?
I don’t really have a favourite song as I have such a diverse taste of music so it’s probably more about how I feel at the moment in time, favourite movie is Goodfellas, with lots and lots more coming a close second!! I read a book which inspired the making of the Goodfellas movie which was really good (can’t remember what it’s called) also a book called Killing Pablo. It was the life and death of Pablo Escobar! Favourite shoe has to be my Nike Huarache Max 90 Hufquake’s amongst many many others! Favourite city has to be my home town of Manchester with possibly Berlin a very close second.
